On January 14, 2025, the police, the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO), and the Presidential Security Service (PSS) held an important meeting to discuss the execution of the arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol.
President Yoon is currently facing charges of rebellion and abuse of power after he imposed a brief martial law on December 3, 2024.
The hour-long meeting, however, did not yield any concrete results. Police said they had requested assistance from the PSS to ensure the execution of the warrant was carried out safely and peacefully and were awaiting a response from the agency.
The CIO has received two consecutive arrest warrants from the court for President Yoon since he was impeached by the National Assembly on December 14, 2024, which resulted in his suspension from office. Mr. Yoon is believed to be at his official residence in Seoul.
During the first arrest attempt, the investigation force and police encountered resistance from PSS officers, causing the approach to fail. In preparation for the second execution, the CIO and police plan to mobilize about 1,000 investigators, demonstrating high determination in completing the task.
The situation around President Yoon's residence is currently very tense as thousands of protesters gathered to express their support or opposition to the arrest. This raised concerns about the risk of conflict between security forces, authorities, and protesters.
The incident is not just a legal confrontation but also a major test of South Korea's political and legal systems. While some argue that the arrest is necessary to maintain the rule of law, others argue that the president's position is needed to avoid setting a dangerous precedent.
Currently, relevant agencies are continuing to coordinate to find appropriate solutions, in the context of increasing pressure from public opinion and the international situation.
