US President Donald Trump on July 3rd (local time) criticized what he called a new threat to the country's identity, aimed at domestic "extremists", right before the 250th birthday of the United States.
In a speech full of patriotism at Mount Rushmore, where there are statues depicting four legendary predecessors, Mr. Trump praised Americanism and praised past leaders. He said at the foot of this iconic monument: "As we approach this great anniversary, we see American identity being attacked again".
Mr. Trump said on July 3: "In recent years, there has been an undeniable effort to drive the American spirit out of us, making us unfamiliar with our history.
Trump supporters have even proposed a bill to engrave his portrait next to Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt.
On July 4, Mr. Trump will hold a political rally in the campaign style at National Mall in Washington, along with a military air show and what he declares to be the world's largest fireworks display.
However, the United States under Mr. Trump is deeply divided at a time that should be an opportunity for national unity. Mr. Trump's approval rating is near a record low, mainly due to the war in Iran and skyrocketing living costs. Democratic opponents have criticized him for his immigration policy, his family's growing wealth and efforts to expand presidential power.
