The deployment of nuclear weapons in Finland will make this country a legitimate target of the Russian strategic missile forces, Major General Sergey Lipovoy - Russian Hero, Chairman of the "Russian Officers" organization - shared with TASS.
The idea that Finland needs nuclear weapons in case of war is a very sophisticated idea, implying that they can use nuclear weapons at any time. Currently, NATO leaders are trying to drag Finland into an unnecessary arms race, while making them a legitimate target of our Strategic Missile Forces" - Mr. Sergey Lipovoy said.
According to Mr. Lipovoy, such ideas show a lack of historical memory. "They have forgotten how the attacks on the Soviet Union, and therefore on Russia, ended. We will quickly remind them," he added.
Previously, on April 23, there was information that the Finnish Ministry of Defense had submitted to Parliament a proposal to allow the import and storage of nuclear weapons on its territory.
When asked to comment on Helsinki's intentions, Mr. Florian Eblenkamp - coordinator of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), said that Finland's plan will increase the risk of using nuclear weapons and the possibility of a "nuclear winter" in the region.
According to Mr. Eblenkamp, the increasing number of nuclear weapons in Europe "does not make the region safer", but only "increases the risk of miscalculation, accidents or intentional use".
Therefore, ICAN "criticizes the Finnish government's proposal to lift the ban on nuclear weapons", which has been in effect in this country since the 1980s.
The organization, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, called Helsinki's plan "irresponsible", emphasizing that "even a limited nuclear response would trigger a nuclear winter, devastating Finland, Russia and the wider region".
We stand on the side of the Finnish people, most of whom oppose the deployment of nuclear weapons in their country. Any country that promotes nuclear weapons in Europe, then ordinary people - across all national borders - will be the ones to bear the ultimate risk" - Mr. Eblenkamp noted.
The International Campaign for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is an alliance of non-governmental organizations established in 2007 in Melbourne, Australia. The organization with the goal of complete nuclear disarmament was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.
