Iran's decision to transfer enriched uranium to Russia could significantly improve the possibility of reaching a more favorable and sustainable peace agreement with the US, said Ruhollah Modabber, a political scientist and expert on Iranian international relations, in an interview with TASS.
If Tehran chooses Russia as the main mediator, publicly declares it and transfers its uranium to Russia, Iran will have a better position to reach a stable and long-term peace agreement with the United States," said Mr. Modabber.
Iranian international relations experts believe that if Tehran had initially accepted Moscow's reconciliation offer and transferred half of the enriched uranium to Russia, the negotiation process with Washington could have taken place faster and brought more beneficial results for Iran.

Mr. Modabber also emphasized that the key point in Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's visit to Russia was the conveyance of a message from Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to this expert, the message of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei reaffirmed Iran's commitment to expanding cooperation with Russia.
Historically, Iran has conducted indirect negotiations with the US to resolve issues related to its nuclear program as well as to lift sanctions. Negotiations between the US and Iran took place in the period April to May 2025.
However, in June of the same year, tensions escalated when Israel launched an attack on Iran, followed by US bombers attacking Iranian nuclear facilities. The ceasefire was established 12 days after the conflict broke out.
Negotiations between the US and Iran resumed in 2026, with the most recent round of negotiations taking place in Geneva on February 26, and the two sides are expected to continue meeting in Vienna in March.
However, on February 28, the US and Israel attacked Iran. Fighting lasted and affected countries in the region. On April 7, US President Donald Trump announced a 2-week bilateral ceasefire.
Then, on April 21, Mr. Trump expressed his intention to extend the ceasefire with Iran. Iranian state television said that Tehran does not recognize Washington's unilateral extension and will act based on its national interests.
