Oil and gas pipelines are critical infrastructure. Oil and gas are transported hundreds, even thousands, of kilometers across continents to reach customers.
Some of the world's famous gas pipelines include the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 pipelines running across the Baltic Sea connecting Russia and Germany, and the Turkstream gas pipeline connecting Russia and Türkiye.
According to Express, a new gas pipeline is about to be built between two African countries: the Nigeria - Morocco gas pipeline is 5,598 km long, with part of the gas also being transported to Europe.
The gas pipeline connecting the two countries is expected to circle the edge of West Africa, passing through Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia and Senegal.
The proposed super pipeline could carry up to 10 billion cubic metres of gas from Nigeria per year and is expected to cost around $25 billion.
Topographical surveys have been carried out in some areas for the pipeline to be built. However, it is not yet clear when the gas pipeline will be completed.
In his 2022 speech, King Muhammed VI of Morocco stressed the importance of this gas pipeline not only for Morocco but also for the entire region.
"I want this to be a strategic project that benefits the whole of West Africa - a region that is home to more than 440 million people. This is a project for peace, for the economic integration of Africa and for common development: a project for the present and for future generations," said the King of Morocco.
