After successfully using the S-400 anti-aircraft missile system in the Sindoor Campaign, India has officially contacted Russia to propose providing more of the missile, senior defense sources told India Today TV.
The Russian-made S-400 missile, used by the Indian military, played a key role in intercepting and disabling missiles and drones launched by Pakistan in the recent conflict.
According to officials who are familiar with the operation, the S-400 missile has proven highly accurate and effective in combating air threats from across the western border.
With the recorded results, India has moved to expand air defense capabilities by seeking more supplies from Russia. The source said Russia is likely to accept the proposal in the near future.
The Russian-made S-400 missile, known in India as the Sudarshan Chakra, is one of the most advanced systems in the world, capable of tracking targets at a distance of up to 600 km and intercepting at a distance of 400 km.
India signed a $5.43 billion deal with Russia in 2018 to purchase five S-400 missile complexes and deploy the first system in punjab in 2021.
The S-400 can intercept aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. The missile's advanced radar system can track more than 100 targets at the same time while mobile launchers allow the missile to quickly redeploy on the ground.
According to India Today, in the recent escalation of tensions, India's S-400 system has forced Pakistan's aircraft and missiles to cancel missions or change flight routes.
On May 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Indian Air Force's Adampur base to reject Pakistan's claim to destroy India's S-400 air defense system at the base.
