Thailand tightens Cambodia border, stops cross-border crimes

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced increased border control with Cambodia to deal with transnational crimes.

On June 23, speaking after a high-level meeting at the government headquarters, Ms. Paetongtarn said that Thailand will take measures to limit crossings of the border for both people and vehicles, including limiting operating hours at border gates.

The Prime Minister announced that travel to 7 provinces bordering Cambodia will only be allowed in necessary cases such as students, patients, and essential goods.

Thailand will stop exports of goods, especially fuel and electricity, if it discovers them serving illegal activities across the border, and consider suspending fuel exports to Cambodia if there are suspicions of misuse.

Thailand will also suspend Internet services and underground cables connecting to Cambodian government agencies and the military.

Immediately after Ms. Paetongtarn's statement, the Thai military announced the implementation of measures to strengthen border control with Cambodia, only allowing essential and humanitarian travel cases.

Thailand's latest moves came amid rising border tensions with Cambodia. Cambodia previously announced on June 22 that it would stop importing gasoline and oil from Thailand, and called on citizens to limit unnecessary travel to Thailand.
