South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been banned from leaving the country over his failed attempt to impose martial law, a Justice Ministry official said on December 9.

Oh Dong-woon, head of the Corruption Investigation Office, which targets high-ranking officials, said he had banned South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol from leaving the country. The information was provided at a parliamentary hearing on December 9 about the measures taken against the president, Reuters reported.

Justice Ministry official Bae Sang Up confirmed that the exit ban on President Yoon Suk Yeol has been implemented.

President Yoon Suk-yeol survived an impeachment vote in the National Assembly on December 7. On the same day, he apologized to the nation, admitting that he had caused anxiety and inconvenience to the Korean people. This was President Yoon Suk-yeol's first public comment since the failed attempt to declare martial law.

In a two-minute speech, President Yoon Suk Yeol stressed: "This emergency declaration of martial law comes from my desperation as the party ultimately responsible for the country's problems."

As part of the martial law investigation, South Korean police are also investigating former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun and other top officials for alleged treason. Kim Yong Hyun was arrested by prosecutors on December 8.
