On May 5 (US time), AFP reported that US President Donald Trump signed a document to restore the Presidential Physical Fitness Award for students in the US.
This is a long-standing program to encourage students to practice health, to assess endurance, strength and flexibility. Students who achieve 85% or more in tests such as running, sit-ups, and push-ups will receive badges or certificates from the President.
The event in the Oval Office was attended by many children and some sports figures.
Speaking before signing the document, Mr. Trump joked about his exercise habits. "I exercise a lot, about one minute a day is maximum," Mr. Trump said.
This comment was made in the context that Mr. Trump's health continues to be a topic of interest to the US media. He is the oldest president to have ever taken the oath of office when returning to the White House last year and will turn 80 next month.
At the event, Mr. Trump also had a humorous exchange with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Mr. Kennedy recalled the story of his father, late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who once made a 50-mile walk, equivalent to about 80km.
Mr. Kennedy joked that such an 80-km walk may not be too difficult for Mr. Trump, because the US President usually plays golf on weekends. He said Mr. Trump can walk up to 9 miles, about 14.5km, every day on the golf course.
Mr. Trump then replied humorously: "When I don't use electric cars", implying that he was repeatedly seen moving by golf cart instead of walking on the field.
Two golfers Gary Player and Bryson DeChambeau were also present when Mr. Trump signed the document.
At the signing ceremony, some students were also present in the Oval Office. Mr. Trump talked to them and asked one student if he was healthy. When he replied "yes, sir", Mr. Trump joked that he was probably healthy enough to beat him in a physical competition.
Mr. Trump often emphasizes his dynamic image, especially when compared to his predecessor Joe Biden, who withdrew from the 2024 presidential race amid growing concerns about age.
However, Mr. Trump's health has been noticed recently, including rumors related to bruises on his hands, swollen legs, and some moments when he seemed to doze off in public. The White House said that his swollen legs were related to venous problems, and the bruises were due to his frequent use of aspirin.
