On April 3rd (local time), diplomatic experts gave an assessment of the rift in relations between British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump. The reason stems from Mr. Trump's statements at a party at the White House, where he publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the British leader's management.
President Trump has simulated how Prime Minister Starmer answered about the need to discuss with the team before making military decisions. Mr. Trump believes that Britain is currently not the best ally to support the US, especially in operations related to Iran. Previously, Britain refused to allow the US to use military bases to carry out initial airstrikes on this country.
President Donald Trump also made negative comments about the condition of the two aircraft carriers of the British Royal Navy, calling them old vehicles and questioning the possibility of deploying them in reality. According to Mr. Trump, the British Prime Minister's delay in deciding to consult with experts is unnecessary in the context of rapid warfare.
The British Prime Minister's Office responded that President Trump had never made an official request to deploy these aircraft carriers. Government sources said Prime Minister Starmer chose not to directly respond to personal statements. Instead, he affirmed that he would continue to maintain decisions based on national interests and the advice of military experts.
Diplomats expect King Charles III's visit to the US in the next 2 weeks to help maintain the channel of dialogue between the two countries. However, former British Ambassador to the US, Mr. Kim Darroch, noted that these disagreements could cause certain difficulties for bilateral cooperation in the future, including issues of trade tariffs. He recommended that Britain should actively strengthen its links with other partners such as Canada, Australia and the European Union (EU).
Before questions from Congress, Prime Minister Starmer declared that he would not change his views on participating in military conflicts just because of pressure from outside. He affirmed that listening to opinions from experts before making important decisions is the responsibility of the head of government to ensure safety and the highest interests for the country.
