Reuters reported on August 27 local time that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the conflict with Russia would end with dialogue but Kiev needed to be in a strong position. In addition, he planned to present the plan to US President Joe Biden and two successor candidates.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Zelensky said the attack on Russia's Kursk province over the past three weeks was part of that plan. Additionally, the plan includes other steps on the economic and diplomatic fronts.
Sharing with reporters in Kiev , President Zelensky said: "The main point of the plan is to force Russia to end the conflict. I really want that, it's fair for Ukraine." He did not elaborate further on the next steps of the plan. However, President Zelensky said he would discuss this plan with US Vice President Kamala Harris and possibly Donald Trump, the Republican candidate in the US presidential election.
President Zelensky shared more about his plans to come to the US in September to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York and plans to meet President Biden.
According to President Zelensky, the main potential forum for negotiations is the next international summit on peace in Ukraine. Ukraine wants Russia to attend this conference.
The first summit to promote Kiev's vision of peace, held in Switzerland in June, deliberately left out Russia. Meanwhile, the conference attracted many delegations but no delegation from China - the world's second largest economy.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said negotiations were impossible after Ukraine launched a major attack on Kursk province on August 6.
Meanwhile, President Zelensky said Russia wants to offer Ukraine terms in conflict resolution solutions. This is something he considers unacceptable.
