The virus, identified as human metapneumovirus (HMPV), is currently overwhelming hospitals and causing concern in the community, especially in northern provinces of China, where cases have spiked this winter - the Independent reported.
Images of people wearing face masks in crowded hospitals have been circulating on social media, echoing the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the Chinese government has declared it a “normal winter phenomenon,” emergency measures have been taken to control the situation.
“Respiratory infections tend to peak in winter. The diseases appear to be less severe and spread on a smaller scale than last year,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said on January 3.
The outbreak comes five years after the world was first alerted to the emergence of a novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China, which has since become a global COVID-19 pandemic with 7 million reported deaths.
What is HMPV virus?
HMPV is a respiratory virus that causes symptoms similar to the common cold and flu, but can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, especially in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.
First identified in 2001, HMPV is a single-stranded RNA virus that is spread through droplets or contact with contaminated surfaces. Symptoms include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and fatigue, with an incubation period of 3-6 days. There is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for HMPV; treatment focuses primarily on symptom relief.
HMPV Outbreak in China
According to China’s National Epidemic Control Center, the number of respiratory infections, including HMPV, has increased sharply during the winter. Health experts say the outbreak is consistent with seasonal trends, but have also launched a pilot program to monitor cases of pneumonia of unknown cause to ensure effective reporting and handling.
Is there a risk of HMPV spreading internationally?
Several cases of HMPV have been reported in Hong Kong, while Cambodia and Taiwan are also closely monitoring the virus. Cambodia has issued a warning about the virus, noting similarities to COVID-19 and seasonal flu.
In India, health officials reassured that HMPV is “not much different from common respiratory viruses.” Meanwhile, Taiwan (China) advised children, the elderly and immunocompromised people to be especially cautious.
However, global health experts are still closely monitoring the outbreak, and the WHO has not issued an emergency warning about the situation. The Chinese government has also pledged to ensure the health and safety of its citizens and international visitors.
HMPV, while not a new virus, has come under the spotlight amid the surge in cases. The question is: is this a warning sign of a new pandemic, or just a regular seasonal outbreak?
