China will lead the formation of an "open source area for artificial intelligence" for BRICS countries, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced today (September 13, local time) at the summit of the group of 11 countries held in New Delhi, AFP reported.
Chinese AI companies are said to be creating the world's leading open-source artificial intelligence models - models with publicly available platform code for users to customize - while US developers lean towards a closed approach.
According to a summary of President Xi Jinping's speech published by state television CCTV, this proposal is part of the "open source and inclusive AI initiative" of the Chinese leader, accompanied by a commitment to "support cooperation in the development and application of major language models".
The initiative also includes establishing in-depth research and training activities on AI" for BRICS countries, with the goal of building an open ecosystem for artificial intelligence.
The Chinese President also called for the establishment of a "wide global AI governance framework, based on consensus".
