Xinhua News Agency reported that on August 20, General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping visited Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, to attend activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of Tibet.
Xinhua News Agency emphasized that the visit shows that China attaches great importance to the development of Tibet when Chairman Xi Jinping personally led a central government delegation to the region for the first time.

Chairman Xi Jinping said that maintaining political stability, social order, national unity and religious harmony are the keys to the development of Tibet, and further efforts are needed to strengthen the public awareness of the Chinese people.
The Chinese leader called on Tibet to develop clean agriculture and energy by promoting the integration of cultural and tourism industries.
Chairman Xi Jinping said that major projects such as the Yarlung Tsangpo hydropower dam project and the Tu Xuyen - Tay Tang railway line must be promoted with a strong spirit, order and efficiency.
With a cement volume 60 times that of Hoover Dam (USA) and a steel volume of more than 116 Empire State buildings (USA), the Yarlung Tsangpo hydropower dam project is designed to become one of the largest infrastructure projects in history. Construction of the super dam began last month and could take at least a decade to complete.

The Yarlung Zangbo super dam project includes five terraced hydropower plants, expected to mainly provide electricity to external consumption while meeting the electricity needs of Tibet.
The Yarlung Zangbo River hydropower project is said to be the world's largest, with an estimated annual capacity of 300 billion kWh of electricity, three times the capacity of the Three Gorges Dam.
