The Olympics - Paris 2024 Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11. This is the third time France has hosted the biggest sporting event on the planet (after 1900 and 1924).
Vietnamese sports has 16 athletes (qualified and special) participating in the Olympics this summer. This number exceeds the sports industry's initial target of 12-15 athletes. However, compared to the previous Olympics, Vietnam had up to 18 athletes participating.
Accordingly, cyclist Nguyen Thi That is the first person to win a ticket to the Olympics, after finishing first in the 2023 Asian road cycling tournament in the women's starting group event (109km).
This is a slot for athletes from countries that cannot win tickets to the Olympics through the rankings of the World Cycling Federation (UCI) or the world championship.
Athlete Nguyen Huy Hoang continues to participate in the Olympic 800m freestyle event, after winning the bronze medal at ASIAD 19 with a time of 51 seconds 44.
In shooting, two athletes won tickets to France: Trinh Thu Vinh (women's 10m pistol) and Le Thi Mong Tuyen (women's 10m air rifle).
In particular, Thu Vinh ranked 5/8 at the 2023 World Shooting Championship (August 2023) and Mong Tuyen also ranked 5th at the 2024 Asian Championship.
In addition, badminton also has two Olympic tickets: Nguyen Thuy Linh and Le Duc Phat. The female athlete from Phu Tho has gone through an impressive scoring process to have the second consecutive appearance in this arena. Her teammate Duc Phat is attending the Olympics for the first time but has been carefully prepared.
Similarly, boxing has two boxers attending the Olympics, Vo Thi Kim Anh and Ha Thi Linh, and archery has two archers Do Thi Anh Nguyet and Le Quoc Phong.
In judo, Hoang Thi Tinh is the only athlete to win a ticket to the Olympics, through a gold medal at the 2024 Lima Panamerican Open.
Besides, rowing has athlete Pham Thi Hue participating in the Olympics for the first time after two unfortunate missed opportunities; Nguyen Thi Huong also represents canoeing at the world arena.
Notably, athlete Trinh Van Vinh, despite having just returned from a 4-year ban for doping, successfully earned a ticket to compete at the Olympics in weightlifting.
In addition to the athletes who won direct tickets to the Olympics, Vietnamese sports have two special spots given to Vo Thi My Tien (swimming) and Tran Thi Nhi Yen (athletics).
