Coach Karl-Heinz Weigang was born on August 24, 1935. He was still in charge at Malaysia's Perak club earlier this year but left the team in February due to conflicts with the board. Replacing him as head coach of Perak Club was then coach Mehmet Durakovic.
Coach Karl-Heinz Weigang once led the South Vietnamese football team to win the Merdeka Cup 1966 in Malaysia. Pham Huynh Tam Lang, Do Thoi Vinh, Nguyen Van Ngon were prominent names of this team that year. It was not until 42 years later, in 2008, that U22 Vietnam Stadium under coach Mai Duc Chung, regained this achievement.
Mr. Weigang returned to work in Vietnamese football in the period 1995-1997. With players from the "golden generation" such as Le Huynh Duc, Nguyen Hong Son, Tran Minh Chien, Tran Cong Minh, Nguyen Huu Thang... The Vietnamese team under the leadership of Mr. Weigang won the silver medal at the 18th SEA Games in 1995 in Thailand and the bronze medal at the 1996 Tiger Cup in Singapore. These are the first titles of the country's football since reintegrating into regional football.
In addition, in more than 50 years of his coaching career (1964-201), Coach Karl-Heinz Weigang has also led many teams such as Malaysia, Mali, Ghana, Gabon, Cameroon youth team and Malaysian clubs Perak and Johor.
The most outstanding achievement of his career was helping the Malaysian Open qualify for the 1980 Moscow Olympics. However, Malaysia boycotted and did not participate. In addition, he also brought home 2 SEA Games gold medals at the 1977 and 1979 events for Malaysian football.
