In the past two years, the Vietnamese women's futsal team has gradually affirmed its leading position in the region with an impressive streak of achievements. The 2024 Southeast Asian Women's Futsal Championship title and the Gold Medal at SEA Games 33 are clear proof of the development process in expertise, competitive spirit and organization in the playing style of coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang's team.
However, entering the 2026 Southeast Asian Women's Futsal Championship as the defending champion, the Vietnamese women's futsal team could not recreate the convincing image of previous tournaments. Although they passed the group stage with 2 victories against the Philippines (2-0) and Myanmar (5-2), the 0-2 defeat to Australia in the opening match partly showed signs of instability in the way they operate their playing style.
Notably, inaccurate handling situations in the midfield area, not really harmonious coordination and mistakes in defense have caused the team many difficulties against the opponent's quick pressing style. These limitations continued to be clearly revealed in the semi-final match against Thailand - where the Vietnamese women's futsal team lost 2-4.
Problems revealed from failure
Against Thailand, the Vietnamese women's futsal team had a favorable start when they opened the score early. However, losing the game afterwards clearly reflects the instability in the defense organization as well as the ability to maintain high intensity of the match. Consecutive missed passes in the midfield created conditions for the opponent to organize quick counter-attacks - a decisive factor in modern futsal.
In addition, the fact that the power-play deployment at the end of the match has not been effective also shows that the team still needs more time to complete tactical plans in situations where they are forced to push high to find an equalizer. Conceding goals continuously while playing power-play not only widens the gap but also significantly affects the playing psychology of the players.
From a professional perspective, this failure poses an urgent requirement to improve the quality of ball control in narrow spaces, while improving the ability to read situations when facing high-intensity pressing play. In the context that regional teams are investing heavily in women's futsal, the gap in level between teams has been significantly narrowed.
Meaning of the third-place match
After losing in the semi-finals, the Vietnamese women's futsal team will enter the third-place match with Indonesia on March 2. In terms of achievements, this is not the goal that the team aims for when entering the tournament. However, this match is still of great significance in many aspects.
First of all, a victory will help the team close the tournament in the leading group in the region, thereby maintaining the ranking and image of the defending champion in the context of increasingly fierce competition. More importantly, this is an opportunity for the coaching staff to review the force, assess the tactical adaptability of the players in high-pressure matches.
Winning third place can also create a positive psychological foundation for the next tournaments in 2026. In high-performance sports, the ability to recover from failure and maintain a stable competitive spirit is a key factor to aim for long-term goals.
The third-place match is therefore not simply a procedural match, but also a necessary test step for the process of adjusting tactics and rebuilding the competitive motivation of the Vietnamese women's futsal team after the defeat in the semi-finals.
