Coach Carrick upset with VAR after Man United lost to Man City

Coach Michael Carrick is upset with the VAR decision to recognize Erling Haaland's goal in the Man United 0-1 loss to Man City match.

In the early morning of September 14 (Vietnam time), Man United lost 0-1 to Man City at Old Trafford in the 4th round of the 2026-2027 Premier League. After the match, coach Michael Carrick was particularly dissatisfied with Haaland's decision to recognize the goal in the 60th minute.

The controversial situation originated from Josko Gvardiol's ball into the penalty area. Haaland finished successfully but was initially determined to be offside. After VAR checking, referee Michael Oliver changed his decision and recognized the goal.

The debate focused on the position of Enzo Fernandez. The Man City midfielder did not touch the ball but made a header, lying above Lisandro Martinez's movement direction. Man United argued that Fernandez had influenced the reaction of the Argentine center-back and affected defensive ability.

However, the VAR team determined that Fernandez did not touch the ball, did not directly obstruct the ball's path and did not prevent Martinez from approaching the ball. Therefore, Haaland's goal was maintained.

Carrick disagreed with this explanation. He said that VAR's decision had a significant impact on the game.

If that's the interpretation of not interfering in the current match, then that really makes me worried. That's a very unbelievable explanation," Carrick said.

However, the English strategist did not completely blame the referee for the defeat. Man City had to play with 10 men from the 23rd minute after Phil Foden received a red card, but Man United could not take advantage of the numerical advantage.

Carrick admitted that the team needs to create more opportunities and improve their ability to take advantage of favorable times. According to him, Man United have had periods of playing well, creating pressure but not enough effectiveness in front of the opponent's goal.

We can create more chances. That's the answer for us," Carrick said.

The defeat to Man City is Man United's second defeat since Carrick led the team. The English coach affirmed that the team will continue to improve and aim for victories in the next matches.
