Before the semi-final match of the 2025 U23 Southeast Asian Championship against U23 Vietnam, the head coach of the Philippines U23 - Mr. Garrath McPherson had a noteworthy sharing at the press conference held on the afternoon of July 24.
Evaluating the team's journey up to now, coach Garrath McPherson was satisfied: "We are fine. In the group stage, we played 3 matches and spent 1 day resting. We are supported by the whole country so we feel very happy before the semi-final match".
U23 Philippines was not highly appreciated before the tournament, but passed the group stage with an impressive performance to be in the top 4 strongest teams: "At first, we were among the teams that were not highly appreciated. However, we played more unitedly, played better with each match.
It was great to be in the semi-final. Players are patriotic and love this sport. They know that they are receiving great support from their hometown. I am also very happy with what I have achieved up to this point".
Coach Garrath McPherson said that the current U23 Philippines squad has many players who have participated in major tournaments: "These players all have experience in international competition, playing in the ASEAN Cup, contributing greatly to our journey to the semi-finals. They have tactical vision and impressive passing ability. However, I still believe that we have a squad where all 23 players are of good quality."
When asked about the U23 Vietnam opponent, Mr. McPherson gave many words of respect. However, he also affirmed that the U23 Philippines is not afraid and has a specific preparation plan.
"U23 Vietnam has many goals from set pieces, always has good preparation, has many players playing for the national team, playing in the national championship".
I have a plan to prevent set pieces from Vietnam. We also have good players in the air. Let's wait and see how we dismantle those weapons of Vietnam," he said.
