The incident happened on the afternoon of August 4 in Su-ngai Kolok district, Narathiwat province, during a match of the Kolok FA Cup. A lightning bolt hit the field area, causing many players to lie motionless. Three people were then taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Safwan was the most seriously injured case and he did not survive. At about 6:40 pm on the same day, Yala FC posted a condolences announcement to the striker's family.
The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) also confirmed the incident and sent condolences to Safwan's family, relatives and club.
On the homepage, FAT wrote: "The player died from a lightning strike in a local football match. The Federation shares the pain with family, relatives and the club during this time".
The incident happened just a few days after Safwan joined Yala FC. The winger signed a contract with the club on July 29 and did not have much time to get acquainted with the new team before the accident.
Previously, Safwan was one of the important factors of Pattani FC. He scored 7 goals in 18 matches in the 2025-2026 season, contributing to helping the team win the right to play in Thai League 2.
Safwan was considered a player with a significant role in Pattani FC's attack before moving to Yala FC.
The accident that occurred in the local match stopped the striker's career just days after he started a new journey.
