This decision means that she will not participate in the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand and also end her peak sports career at the age of 20.
According to the representative of the athletics department, Nhi Yen's termination of international training and competition came from her personal wish, in order to focus on her university study abroad plan. The sports industry expressed regret but at the same time respected the choices of athletes and their families.
Born in 2005 in the former Long An (now Tay Ninh province), Nhi Yen discovered her talent from high school. She was trained by coach Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong - who was responsible for discovering and training many outstanding short-range athletes. In just a few years, Nhi Yen quickly rose to become a typical face of Vietnam's athletics.
Since 2022, Yen has won many notable achievements such as the gold medal at the national youth tournament, the gold medal at the 100m at the National Sports Festival, the silver medal at the 32nd SEA Games (Cambodia), the silver medal at the 2024 U20 Asian Cup and the bronze medal at the 2025 Asian Championship in the 100m distance. She also attended the 2024 Paris Olympics as a potential young athlete. Yen's best result in the 100m distance was 11.40 seconds.
With a height of 1m73 and stable performance, Nhi Yen was expected to become the successor to the position of her seniors such as Vu Thi Huong or Le Tu Chinh. The decision to stop at the age of 20 is considered a loss for Vietnamese athletics.
