Zinedine Zidane's time at the French national team seems to have come. After many years of waiting for the "final destination", all signs show that the head coach position of the French national team has been predetermined to name Zidane.
Didier Deschamps' French team has just said goodbye to the World Cup after losing to England in the World Cup 2026 third-place match. Previously, the strategist who won the World Cup declared that this would be his last tournament with the French team, so this position is currently vacant.
All eyes are now on Zidane, who has not led any team since leaving Real Madrid in 2021.
However, everything seems to indicate that the former Real Madrid legend will have to wait a while longer.
French newspapers reported that on July 8, the Joint Committee (including the French Senate and House of Representatives) "decided to set a maximum salary ceiling of 450,000 Euros/year, equivalent to the salary of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of a state-owned public industrial and commercial company".
This salary is the maximum level that Zidane can receive in his position as head coach of the French national team. But that remuneration is 10 times lower than what Deschamps has ever received.
For that reason, the French Football Federation is waiting for this law to be amended to give Zidane a salary higher than the current limit. This decision will need the approval of Marina Ferrari, Minister of Sports, Youth and Community Life.
In a recent interview, Ms. Ferrari said that Zidane is "a good choice" for the French national team.
However, she remained cautious. "As you know," she continued, "Deciding who is the coach is not the authority of the Minister of Sports.
