In early May 2025, Lao Dong Newspaper reporters in provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region recorded that durian prices are currently falling sharply, causing many gardeners to have to take them to the side of the retail road.
In Can Tho City, at this time, many durian gardens have entered the peak harvest season. However, compared to 2024, the consumption and price situation this year is considered by gardeners to be more difficult.
Mr. Nguyen Dac Hung (Phong Dien district, Can Tho city) shared that this year, durian is a beautiful fruit with good productivity, but finding an output is very difficult. Companies buy for exports at quite low prices. Ri6 durian type A is only from 50,000 - 51,000 VND/kg, type B is from 30,000 - 31,000 VND/kg.
Not only Mr. Hung, many other durian growers are in a similar situation. This year, traders are sparing purchases, even not buying in some places due to not finding stable output. Meanwhile, the fruit will continue to ripen until the ripening period, if not picked in time, it will fall, crack, and damage.
With an area of more than 2,000m² of durian planting in the harvest time, Mr. Nguyen Van Trieu (living in Phu An commune, Cai Lay district, Tien Giang province) said that before, traders came to the garden to buy, but now they do not buy anymore. Plus the price is too low, he is forced to hire a picker and take it to the bar to sell. Up to now, his durian garden has 60% not sold, causing him to stand still.
According to Mr. Le Van Phuoc Lac - Director of Phu An Agricultural Service Cooperative, durian purchased in the garden costs about 50,000 VND/kg. Many gardeners informed that due to the decrease in durian prices, traders do not even enter the garden to cut fruit, forcing farmers to bring them to the market or set up stalls along the national highway to sell each fruit.
Mr. Vo Tan Loi - Chairman of the Tien Giang Province Durian Association - said that recently, many shipments of durian exported to China have been returned due to inspection and detection of gold o and cadimi contamination. Since then, some businesses have suffered losses. Through this incident, it can be seen that China is a major durian consumer market in the world and when they issued regulations to regulate the above two substances, we must comply to bring durian to this billion-people market.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Tien Giang province, the durian growing area in the province is currently about 22,000 hectares, most concentrated in Cai Be and Cai Lay districts. In Can Tho City, in the past 3 years, the durian growing area here has increased nearly 3 times, from about 2,500 hectares (in 2022) to about 7,000 hectares. Durian areas are developed in key fruit growing areas of the city such as Phong Dien district, Thoi Lai district, part of Co Do district and O Mon district.
