On July 21, vegetables at traditional markets in Ho Chi Minh City started to increase in price slightly compared to early July. Lettuce costs 50,000-60,000 VND/kg (an increase of 5,000 - 10,000 VND), water spinach costs 30,000 - 40,000 VND. VND/bunch, tomatoes 30,000 - 40,000 VND/kg (increased by 10,000 VND/kg)... Green onions and other spices also increased by 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg.
“Some leafy vegetables have slightly increased in price, the quality of the vegetables has also decreased, they are damaged a lot, so I also import less. Because the Southern provinces have had a lot of rain recently, it has affected the vegetable growing of some gardeners," Ms. Bich Hoa - a trader at Nguyen Tri Phuong market (District 5) - said.
At 3 wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City, in general, the amount of vegetables and fruits arriving at the market fluctuated slightly but did not much affect the price and supply of goods to people. In particular, the prices of many vegetables in Da Lat increased sharply compared to the beginning of the year, some even doubled or tripled such as lettuce, Chinese cabbage, cauliflower...
Ms. Tran Thi Duyen - a small vegetable trader at Thu Duc wholesale market in Ho Chi Minh City - said: "Due to continuous rainy weather, the yield of most vegetables has decreased by 50-70%. Therefore, import prices from gardeners also tend to increase."
Meanwhile, at supermarkets, product prices are quite stable because the supermarket's supply has been signed in advance, and many discount and promotion programs have also been implemented.
At the Saigon Co.op supermarket system, many promotional "festivals" are organized for each industry, each product and each different season of the year. Dalat Vegetable Festival takes place from July 22 to 28 in Ho Chi Minh City with 200 fruit and vegetable items from Da Lat raw material areas discounted by 33%.
