Advertising revenue of news agencies is threatened.
Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung has just sent a report to National Assembly delegates on a number of issues related to the questioning group in this field at the 8th Session. This includes the management of advertising activities in the press and online environment.
The Minister said that according to Statista data, online advertising revenue in 2023 in Vietnam will reach 1.3 billion USD, accounting for 50% of total spending in the entire Vietnamese advertising industry (2.6 billion USD), an increase of about 30% compared to 2021 (about 850 million USD).
80% of the online advertising market share focuses on cross-border platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, TikTok (more than 1 billion USD), the remaining 20% are electronic newspapers, domestic online advertising businesses...
According to Minister Nguyen Manh Hung, the trend of online advertising market share (internet advertising) will continue to increase in the coming time.
Online advertising with its overwhelming technological advantage is threatening and shrinking the advertising revenue of news agencies. While the content is not censored and held accountable like news agencies.
Violations of advertising content mainly include advertising for illegal services and products (black credit, virtual currency, gambling games, betting, etc.).
Advertising traditional medicines of unknown origin, even advertising cures for all diseases, including cancer; false and fraudulent advertising (using images impersonating newspaper and radio logos to create trust)...
It is worth noting that advertisements of some Vietnamese brands and businesses are being attached to toxic, reactionary content that violates Vietnamese law, especially on YouTube and Facebook.
In addition, a portion of advertising revenue is shared by YouTube and Facebook with those who produce toxic, reactionary clips, indirectly supporting anti-state activities.
Request to block and remove violating ads
Faced with the above situation, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung said that he has coordinated with agencies to deploy a technical system to scan and detect illegal advertisements, focusing on major social networking platforms with many violations such as Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok.
Authorities have fought with cross-border platforms Facebook, Google, and TikTok, demanding that they block and remove violating advertisements; and at the same time, requiring compliance with Vietnamese advertising laws.
From 2018 to present, Facebook has blocked and removed 539 accounts, 64 groups, 664 fanpages, pages advertising gambling games, exchanging rewards, illegally buying and selling invoices, and fraudulently depositing money into games.
Along with that are 2,460 links selling and advertising illegal products and services, gambling advertisements; 117 pages advertising, trading, and buying and selling illegal invoices.
TikTok has blocked 32 accounts, 7 illegal advertising content and deleted 6 fake accounts.
Google has applied artificial intelligence (AI) to proactively block and handle about 3,000 advertising content and advertising accounts that violate regulations related to advertising for traditional oriental medicine, promising to cure 100% of diseases, including cancer.
Advertising agencies, brands, and publishers are also required to increase scrutiny of ad content and placement.
Put an end to the widespread advertising that indirectly supports the production and dissemination of bad, toxic, and illegal content on cyberspace.
In the coming time, in addition to continuing to perfect the system of legal documents, Minister Nguyen Manh Hung said that it is necessary to develop a monitoring system, focusing on promoting the application of AI technology to scan and detect advertising violations on digital platforms.
