On November 18 (local time), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 2024 G20 Summit opened with the theme "Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet" under the chairmanship of Brazilian President Lula da Silva, G20 President 2024.
At the invitation of the President of Brazil, this year's G20 Chair, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh led the Vietnamese delegation to attend the conference.
The conference opened with the launching ceremony of the Global Alliance against Poverty and Hunger, following a discussion on efforts to combat these issues. During the meeting, Brazilian President Lula da Silva also announced the alliance's founding countries, including Vietnam.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, speaking at the discussion session, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highlighted Vietnam's achievements as a successful model in poverty reduction.
The Prime Minister shared Vietnam’s three key lessons in poverty reduction with other countries. First, economic growth should not come at the expense of social security, progress, justice, or environmental sustainability. Second, food security must be prioritized, with agriculture recognized as a cornerstone of the economy. Finally, people should remain at the center of all efforts, emphasizing investment in human development and fostering high-quality human resources aligned with advancements in science, technology, and innovation.
On that basis, the Prime Minister proposed three strategic guarantees for the cause of global poverty eradication.
Firstly, The Prime Minister emphasized that ensuring peace, stability, and development cooperation is a prerequisite for poverty eradication and inclusive development. He also urged the G20 to take a leading role in promoting these priorities while refraining from politicizing science, technology, and development matters, particularly in areas such as trade, agriculture, and food security.
Second, ensuring that the global agro-food system is efficient, stable, adaptive and resilient to climate change is a long-term foundation.
The Prime Minister called on the G20 to increase technology transfer, technical assistance, preferential finance, and smart governance for developing and underdeveloped countries in the transition to green and sustainable agriculture and support the assurance of food supply chains for low-income countries.
The third is to ensure investment in people, taking education and training, and social security as key tasks for building a harmonious, inclusive, and sustainable society. Taking people as the center, subject, goal, driving force, and resource for sustainable development; prioritizing resources, building practical, feasible, and effective policies for hunger eradication and poverty reduction, "leaving no one behind".
At the end of his speech, the Prime Minister quoted President Ho Chi Minh's conclusion, "Unity is invincible strength", and in that spirit affirmed that Vietnam is committed to promoting multilateralism, close international solidarity, and actively and effectively contributing to the common effort to build a world without lasting poverty and a sustainable world. Vietnam is ready to share experiences and coordinate with G20 countries and international organizations to implement South - South and trilateral programs on ensuring food security and fighting global poverty and hunger.
The Prime Minister's speech was welcomed and expressed agreement and appreciation by many countries.
