Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh congratulates Timor-Leste on joining ASEAN

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh congratulated Timor-Leste on being unanimously admitted by ASEAN as a new member in October 2025.

The Government newspaper reported that on the morning of May 27, Politburo member and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana gusmao, within the framework of an official visit to Malaysia and attending the 46th ASEAN Summit and other relevant Summits in Kuala Lumpur (24-28.25.2025).

At the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh warmly congratulated Timor-Leste on being admitted by ASEAN leaders as a new member of the bloc at the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit in October 2025; suggested that the two sides continue to maintain exchanges and contacts at all levels, especially at high levels, and proactively discuss and coordinate to reach cooperation agreements in areas of mutual interest such as economy, trade, investment, agriculture, rice import-export, e-government and digital transformation.

The Prime Minister suggested that the Timor-Leste Government create favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises, including telecommunications, oil and gas enterprises, to invest and do business smoothly in Timor-Leste; Vietnam is always ready to share experiences in socio-economic development with Timor-Leste.

For his part, Prime Minister Xanana gusmao sincerely thanked Vietnam for its warm feelings for the country and people of Timor-Leste, as well as Vietnam's effective support and assistance in helping Timor-Leste join ASEAN; affirmed that Timor-Leste especially values and wishes to strengthen comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam, and expressed his impression of Vietnam's remarkable socio-economic development achievements in recent times.

Agreeing with the proposals of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Prime Minister Xanana gusmao affirmed his desire to make the cooperation between the two countries increasingly practical and in-depth, especially in the fields of telecommunications, aviation and education; effectively and closely coordinate at regional and international multilateral forums, including ASEAN.

The two leaders agreed to deepen bilateral relations between the two countries in the coming time, promote the results achieved during President Jose Ramos-Horta's visit to Vietnam (31.7 - 3.8.2024); continue to promote high-level and all-level visits, effectively implement signed agreements; exploit the potential for economic cooperation, especially trade - investment, and create favorable conditions for businesses of the two countries to do business and operate in each other's markets.

The two sides also agreed to promote cultural, tourism and educational cooperation, actively contributing to the implementation of people-to-people exchanges and promoting friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries.
