On the afternoon of August 2, at the Government Headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta on the occasion of the President's state visit to Vietnam, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Both sides highly appreciated the positive developments in the friendly cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Timor-Leste. High-level exchanges and contacts are maintained; Trade and investment cooperation is promoted; Import-export turnover in the first 5 months of 2024 will grow nearly 30% over the same period (reaching more than 6 million USD); Viettel Telecommunications Group's (Telemor) effective investment and business activities in Timor-Leste contribute positively to socio-economic development in Timor-Leste.
The two leaders also agreed on the need to strengthen political trust through exchanges and contacts at high levels and at all levels; effectively deploy high-level agreements; continue to promote completion of the legal framework for bilateral cooperation; effectively exploit the great potential for cooperation between the two countries.
Assessing that rice is a key commodity in trade cooperation between the two countries, the Prime Minister proposed that the two sides soon extend or sign a new Memorandum of Understanding on Rice Trade, contributing to ensuring food security; Encourage Timor-Leste to increase imports of Vietnamese goods suitable to Timor-Leste's needs and tastes such as textiles, footwear, beverages, dairy foods, processed foods, agricultural and aquatic products...
The Prime Minister requested Timor-Leste to soon completely resolve business difficulties of Vietnamese enterprises in the area and create more favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to expand business investment, especially in the field of telecommunications, providing digital service solutions and oil and gas exploration and exploitation.
Expressing deep impression of Vietnam's experience in macroeconomic management and successful international integration, President Timor-Leste supported the proposals of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh ; hopes that Vietnam will support Timor-Leste in areas where Vietnam has strengths such as agriculture and ensuring food security, infrastructure development, education and training, human resource development, healthcare, poverty reduction; increase investment presence in Timor-Leste; Timor-Leste is committed to creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese businesses.
The two leaders agreed to promote cooperation in other important fields such as security, defense, information and communication, education and training; effectively take advantage of new trends such as green economy, clean energy, and innovation; Promote people-to-people exchanges through tourism development, cultural exchanges...
Discussing international and regional issues, the two sides agreed to continue to coordinate and support each other at multilateral organizations. The Prime Minister highly appreciated Timor-Leste's determination and efforts in implementing the "Roadmap for Timor-Leste to become a full member of ASEAN"; Emphasizing that Vietnam is always consistent and supports Timor-Leste to soon become a full member of ASEAN. President Jose Ramos-Horta affirmed that Timor-Leste is ready to support Vietnam's candidacy for all multilateral, regional and international mechanisms and organizations.
