Gold price forecast
Gold prices entered the new trading week with a cautious sentiment, after failing to maintain the recovery momentum and ending the week around 4,007.3 USD/ounce. The fluctuation around the 4,000 USD/ounce threshold shows that buyers are still cautious, while pressure from the USD, bond yields and interest rate prospects continue to dominate the market.
The latest survey by a precious metals website with 14 Wall Street experts shows that pessimistic views are clearly prevailing. Up to 11 experts, equivalent to 79% of participants, predict gold prices will fall this week. Two people, accounting for 14%, predict that precious metals may go sideways and only one expert expects prices to increase.
Individual investors have a more balanced view. Among 169 votes, 68 people, equivalent to 40%, predict gold prices will increase; 61 people, accounting for 36%, believe that prices will continue to decrease. The rest believe that gold may accumulate in a narrow range.
Cautious sentiment appeared after gold prices experienced a less positive trading week. Although consumer inflation in the US showed signs of cooling down, other economic data still showed that the economy maintained its resilience. This makes expectations of the Fed's ability to soon ease monetary policy not clearly strengthened.
This week, the US economic data release schedule is relatively sparse. Therefore, gold prices may react more strongly to unexpected information related to geopolitics, oil prices, the USD and bond yields.
The focus of the market is the monetary policy meeting of the European Central Bank taking place on July 22-23. 7. Investors are not only interested in interest rate decisions but also monitor the agency's assessment of inflation, growth and policy orientations in the coming months.
The tough message may support the euro but at the same time increase concerns that global interest rates will remain high. Conversely, more cautious growth signals may increase defense and support demand for gold.
In addition to the ECB meeting, the market will monitor the number of unemployment claims in the US, the preliminary purchasing managers' index in July and new home sales in June. In the context of a lack of clear momentum, the $4,000/ounce threshold continues to be seen as an important psychological support zone for gold prices.
