Gold price forecast
World gold prices are receiving support from the weakening USD, as the market continues to assess the monetary policy outlook of the US Federal Reserve (Fed). However, high US bond yields and rising oil prices are creating significant resistance to the upward momentum of precious metals.
Recent US economic data shows mixed signals. Retail sales, consumer price index (CPI) and consumer sentiment have somewhat weakened, thereby reducing expectations that the Fed will continue to raise interest rates in the September meeting. The market currently leans towards the possibility that the Fed will keep interest rates unchanged, while the probability of interest rate hikes is assessed lower.
However, inflationary pressure has not completely disappeared. Some manufacturing data shows that input costs continue to increase, while the yield of 10-year US government bonds fluctuates around 4.7%. High yields increase the opportunity cost of holding gold - an asset that does not yield interest.
Investors are also focusing on monitoring the minutes of the Fed's July meeting and upcoming data such as the number of unemployment claims, the Philadelphia manufacturing index and the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI). These figures could significantly affect interest rate expectations and the next direction of gold prices.
Geopolitical factors continue to be an important variable. Tensions related to the Strait of Hormuz keep the energy market cautious. Brent oil prices fluctuate around 91.5-92 USD/barrel, while WTI oil is around 85 USD/barrel. High oil prices may increase concerns about inflation, while boosting defense demand for gold. However, if inflation causes bond yields to continue to rise, gold's rally may be limited.
Technically, the 4,446 USD/ounce zone is considered a noteworthy resistance level. If it surpasses and maintains above this area, gold prices may head to 4,595 USD/ounce, and further to 4,778 USD/ounce.
In the opposite direction, the 4,320 USD/ounce zone is playing a near supporting role. If this level is lost, gold prices may be under pressure to adjust to 4,228 USD/ounce, or even 4,106 USD/ounce.
In the short term, gold prices are likely to continue to fluctuate strongly when simultaneously affected by US monetary policy, bond yield developments, the USD, oil prices and geopolitical tensions.
