Gold price forecast
Goldman Sachs' gold price targets - one of the largest banks on Wall Street - have changed significantly in the past year, reflecting a period of strong fluctuations in both gold prices and Fed monetary policy.
As early as October 2025, the bank set a gold price target for the fourth quarter of 2026, based on expectations that the Fed will implement 3 more waves of interest rate cuts in the early 2026 period.
This target continues to be raised when 2026 takes place. In January, the bank raised the target to 5,400 USD/ounce and by April it remained at this level. The bank also expects gold holdings of Western ETFs to increase as the Fed eases policy.
However, this optimism was hindered in June, when Goldman Sachs reversed its forecast of the Fed's ability to cut interest rates in 2026. This development occurred after economic and labor market data were stronger than expected, along with a tougher stance from Fed officials. Goldman Sachs then postponed the expected interest rate cut to June and December 2027, instead of December 2026 and March 2027 as previously predicted.
The latest report is the next adjustment as Goldman Sachs lowered its short-term forecast for 2026, but maintained its long-term target for 2027. That is the target of reaching $5,400/ounce by the end of 2027, keeping this forecast unchanged even as short-term interest rate outlook becomes less favorable for gold.
This week, the developments of oil, US bond yields and the USD will be early indicators indicating whether gold is preparing to enter a new rally or is just recovering after a strong sell-off at the beginning of the week.
