Since being in his mother's womb, Danh Thien Nguyen (born in 2012), residing in Minh Long Hamlet, Minh Hoa Commune, Chau Thanh District (Kien Giang), did not have a father by his side. Not long after his birth, his mother left him to find new happiness for herself. Since then, his grandparents have become the sole support to take care of their grandchild.
We visited the family of Danh Thien Nguyen, a 7/2 student at Minh Hoa Secondary School, with Mr. Lam Hoa (Nguyen's homeroom teacher). In the old, dilapidated house, Mr. Danh Nhi (born in 1958, Nguyen's maternal grandfather) had just returned home after finishing a motorbike taxi ride.
Old age, type 2 diabetes and joint pain make it difficult for Mr. Nhi to move. Mrs. Tran Thi Ry (born in 1967, Nguyen's grandmother) has to replace her children by being both grandmother and mother to her 3 young grandchildren.
Many people feel heartbroken when at this age, the grandparents should be at peace and happy with their children and grandchildren, but the old couple has to work hard to raise 3 young grandchildren.
Danh Thien Nguyen is the oldest of the three grandchildren, followed by his 9-year-old and 9-month-old grandsons. Every day, to earn money to take care of the family, Mr. Nhi can only drive a motorbike taxi.
The job is not very favorable, the income is "sometimes good, sometimes bad", the average monthly income of 3 million VND is not enough to support the whole family.
Feeling heartbroken seeing their grandchildren lacking parental love, the grandparents also tried to overcome their pain. Mrs. Ry herself suffered from arthritis and goiter, and the doctor recommended surgery, but the family had no money, so the days and months passed by.
Mrs. Ry exclaimed: "Even if we have the chance to have surgery, who will take care of the children? Now it's difficult to take care of daily meals, and the additional cost of hospitalization is just too much."
Mrs. Ry said that the family has 4 children (3 boys, 1 girl), the oldest born in 1984, the youngest born in 1994, all of them are married but their fate is not to be together, so the grandparents play the role of paternal and maternal grandparents and have to take responsibility.
Mrs. Ry felt sorry for Nguyen, a grandchild who did not know his father and had no memories of his mother. Not only that, Nguyen also had a heart disease. For the past 2 years, after coming home from school, he felt tired and increasingly pale. He went to the Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital in Kien Giang province and discovered his illness. The doctor recommended surgery, but because the family's financial situation was too difficult, how could he afford the heart surgery?
Nguyen could not eat much, his body became weaker and weaker, and he had allergies, itchy skin, and his legs were covered with dark scars.
Mr. Lam Hoa, Danh Thien Nguyen's homeroom teacher, said: "From the beginning of the school year, after learning about the family's circumstances, the school guided the family through the procedures to exempt him from tuition fees. Because his health was not good, he was also exempted from physical education. Despite his illness, Nguyen was very studious and got along well with his classmates."
Every day that passes, the burden of life still falls on the shoulders of the old couple. Every month, the money for milk and diapers for the 9-month-old baby, the money for food for the 2 older children and Thien Nguyen's own medicine has made Mr. Nhi worry. Not to mention the debt of 50 million VND from many years ago, which was lent by the district's Social Policy Bank from the job creation program, but has not been paid yet.
Mr. Lam Quang Huy, Deputy Secretary of the Party Cell and Deputy Head of Minh Long Hamlet, said: The level 4 house that Nguyen's family is living in has been built for a long time and has been reinforced and repaired, but it is still temporary. The local government and philanthropists have also provided some support, but it is still not enough because Nguyen's heart disease is in dire need of money for treatment. The locality sincerely hopes that kind-hearted people from near and far will help so that Nguyen has money for heart surgery, because he currently looks very weak.
Surrounded by adversity, Thien Nguyen still tries to be optimistic amidst all the difficulties. “My grandparents have suffered too much for me, so I hope to be cured so I can continue my studies, and when I grow up, I can have a stable job to take care of my grandparents and help those in difficult situations like me,” Nguyen confided.
