Houses closed because of "dust storm
For about a month now, dozens of households in Lam Xuan, Nhi Ha, Nhi Trung villages (Cua Viet commune, Quang Tri province) have been living in anxiety as dust from the construction site of the Quang Tri Airport (Airport) project rolls up with gusts of wind, at times foggy, limiting visibility.
Ms. Hoang Thi Tam's house (95 years old, Lam Xuan village) located right in front of the construction site is always in a state of closed doors. Although her children and grandchildren clean up up to 3 times a day, furniture and floors are always covered with a thick layer of fine dust.
Mr. Phan Van Than (born 1967, Nhi Ha village) compared the dust attacking the dense house to "like rain". Ms. Tran Thi Thang - Mr. Than's wife - recounted that last week, the children had summer vacation and returned to their hometown to play with their grandparents. However, due to the scorching hot weather combined with the "dust storm" surrounding them too harshly, the children had to evacuate immediately as soon as they returned.
A few steps away, Mr. Pham Van Lap's family (born 1966) had to use nylon to seal the door of the wardrobe, and wrap tarpaulins around the porch to block dust. Mr. Lap said that the most difficult thing now is washing clothes, clothes drying up immediately become dirty, so they don't know how to manage.
The most severe damage is to the household of Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh (born 1975) - owner of a porridge shop in Nhi Ha village. Previously, the shop sold all day, consuming 25kg of porridge per day. About a month ago, dust from the construction site flew everywhere, causing diners to leave. Ms. Binh had to withdraw and only sell in the morning, but she did not sell all 10kg of porridge a day.
At noon on June 9, being present directly at the construction site of the Quang Tri airport project, reporters recorded hundreds of turns of motorized vehicles and dump trucks carrying soil and rocks moving bustlingly. At the runway and safety rail items, every time a truck passes by, large streaks of dust and soil are created.
Authorities urgently propose, investors will increase irrigation vehicles
Mr. Hoang Thanh Luong - Head of the Economic Department of Cua Viet commune - said that the unit has continuously received feedback and has directly inspected the site many times. Through inspection, the largest dust generation point is located at the end of the runway item adjacent to the Canh Hom River, where landfill construction is being concentrated.
On the morning of June 9, the commune continued to come to the construction site to request the contractor to add more measures, increase the frequency of watering trucks. However, due to the too large construction area, harsh sun combined with strong Lao wind, the remediation encountered many difficulties.
It is known that on June 8, Cua Viet Commune People's Committee sent a document to Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board reporting on the environmental pollution caused by dust arising during the construction of the Quang Tri airport project. At the same time, Cua Viet Commune People's Committee requested the Provincial People's Committee, relevant agencies and units to provide timely direction.
According to the Quang Tri Airport Project Management Board, to ensure the committed progress, units are having to organize total "3 shifts, 4 teams" construction. Recognizing the dust situation affecting residential areas, the Management Board has mobilized and increased 6 specialized watering trucks to focus on dust suppression on service roads. It is expected that in about half a month, when the ground leveling volume is basically completed, the dust situation will be significantly reduced.
In the coming time, the unit is committed to continuing to mobilize more irrigation vehicles, applying measures to minimize dust, avoiding affecting people's lives.
The Quang Tri airport project has a total investment of more than 5,800 billion VND. According to the decision approving the investor selection results of the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee, the investor implementing component project 2 (building an airport) of the Quang Tri airport project is the Joint Venture of T&T Infrastructure Investment and Development Co., Ltd. (a member of T&T Group) and CIENCO 4 Group Joint Stock Company.
