The damp rented house located deep in an alley in Cai Khe ward has been home for decades to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city) and her grandson Truong Thanh Quy (12 years old).
His father died early, his mother could no longer raise him, so from a few months old, Quy was taken in and cared for by his grandmother by selling lottery tickets in the Ben Ninh Kieu area.
The situation became more and more difficult as Mrs. Hong got older and suffered from many serious illnesses, especially lung disease. Quy accepted to drop out of school to help his grandmother sell candy to earn money to cover expenses.
"I love studying, I love learning Vietnamese the most, but I'd rather quit school to earn money to help my grandmother. I don't want to see my grandmother get old and have to send me to school. I just want my grandmother to get well and live with me" - Quy sobbed.
Quy also added that a few months ago, the weather turned cold and she caught a cold. At that time, he just thought she was sick, so he helped her buy some medicine to get through the day. Unexpectedly, one night, she fainted, causing the whole poor boarding house to panic and take her to the hospital. Luckily, there, Mrs. Hong received help from some benefactors and survived.
"I was sick for several days, Quy didn't eat or drink anything, Quy was worried I would die!" - Mrs. Hong was about to cry.
Talking about her lottery ticket business, Ms. Hong also said that for many consecutive days, when Can Tho had heavy rain and flooding, she could not sell all her tickets every day. There were days when she had to go hungry to sell but still did not have enough money to pay for her rent, her tears fell on her lottery tickets because she could not do anything else.
"Some agents do not allow us to return unsold lottery tickets, so we have lost a lot of money, and we cannot provide food for Quy. Before, I used to save up to buy meat for Quy twice a month, but now I only buy it once a month, usually with eggs or vegetables. That is why even though he is 12 years old, he only weighs 29kg," Ms. Hong added.
Mr. Dao Thanh Liem (owner of Tu Liem boarding house) said that Ms. Hong and her nephew Quy have been staying here for more than 10 years. They have a very good personality, are sociable, friendly, and helpful to everyone. Because they don't have a lot of money, Ms. Hong often sends Mr. Liem money for daily rent, sometimes owing 3-5 meals but never missing.
"The boarding house is poor so we depend on each other. Sometimes I give them a bowl of soup, sometimes another family gives them some fish. I just hope that Mrs. Hong and Quy will receive help from everyone to help with some of their living expenses," Mr. Liem hopes.
