Students worry about struggling if they immediately drop IELTS bonus points, excellent students in university admissions

The proposal to remove bonus points for excellent students and IELTS certificates in university admissions from 2027 has received the attention of students, especially regarding the application roadmap.

The proposal of the Ministry of Education and Training to abolish the maximum bonus of 3 points for international certificates and excellent student awards in university admissions from 2027 is attracting the attention of students and parents.

Students worry about struggling

Currently in 12th grade in Dong Anh commune, Hanoi, Do Thi Lam Anh - said that she regularly monitors university enrollment information to prepare for the final school year. According to the female student, adjusting the enrollment method is normal, but changes related to the scoring method should be announced early.

I think if the regulations change, they should be announced soon so that students know and proactively calculate. Grade 12 has quite a lot to prepare, from preparing for the high school graduation exam to learning about admission methods" - Lam Anh said.

According to the female student, for students who are learning about many admission methods, each change in the scoring method can affect the choice of school, major and study plan.

Lam Anh believes that the abolition of bonus points for excellent student achievements or international certificates may be considered, but the timing of application needs to be considered.

If applied immediately from 2027, students who have spent a lot of time preparing for excellent student exams, participating in exams or preparing international certificates and setting a goal to use this achievement when applying for university admission may be passive and difficult to maneuver in time. In my opinion, if there is a change, it should be applied from 2028, announced early this year so that students know, thereby proactively adjusting their study plans" - Lam Anh shared.

Meanwhile, Do Tuan Duong - an 11th grade student in Dong Anh commune, Hanoi - believes that if policies are changed, it is worth considering postponing the application time and reserving it for new enrollment courses, that is, applying it to this year's 10th grade students. Students will have time to plan their studies in accordance with the new points in university admissions.

According to Duong, many students have identified university admission goals early and strive to participate in excellent student exams, international certificates, with the expectation that achievements can be scored when considering admission.

I think there should be a clear roadmap, which can be applied from the new enrollment courses so that students know in advance and prepare right from the beginning" - Tuan Duong said.

Parents hope to avoid too hasty changes

From a parent's perspective, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong (Vinh Thanh commune, Hanoi) - whose child is in high school - believes that the enrollment adjustment needs to be aimed at stability and transparency.

According to Ms. Huong, each year students have to learn about many admission methods, while parents also need time to accompany their children in choosing suitable options.

Parents are not afraid of policy adjustments if the goal is to create more fairness and transparency. However, if there is a change, there should be a roadmap for students and families to know in advance, avoiding the situation of preparing in one way and then having to change again when the enrollment period approaches" - Ms. Huong said.

According to this parent, for 12th grade students, the preparation time for the entrance exam is not much left. Therefore, if there are changes related to bonus points or admission methods, early announcement will help them be more proactive.

Children need to know what they should focus on, which admission plan to choose. If the regulations are announced soon and there is a transition period, students will be less passive" - Ms. Huong shared.
