Traditional costume parade in Hue causes controversy

QUẢNG AN |

HUE - More than 1,200 young people parade in traditional costumes in Hue. The image of the queen sitting on the throne caused controversy because her outfit resembled a "music troupe".

On the afternoon of June 8, the "Vietnam convergence" parade event took place in the ancient capital of Hue, attracting more than 1,200 young people and tourists who love traditional costumes and culture to participate. This is a community activity within the framework of Hue Community Ao Dai Week - Hue Festival 2025, organized by the Department of Culture and Sports of Hue City.

In the diverse traditional costumes of Vietnam, Japan... young people marched through the streets along the Huong River, creating a vibrant festive atmosphere.

The highlight is the image of the Southern Phuong queen sitting on a platform, being "squatting" in the middle of the group. The leader was the team commander, behind him the team holding the golden spoon and the feather fan. The queen's husband wore a golden phoenix, a black hat, and a radiant face.

However, this image later caused controversy on social networks because the group of " fancy actors" wearing costumes were said to resemble the traditional funeral team in Hue (called "music group"). Some opinions said that using this costume in the parade was inappropriate, losing the solemnity of the queen image.

However, there are also many opinions defending that this is a regional cultural exchange and should be positively recognized the spirit of preserving traditional costumes of young people.

On June 9, Mr. Phan Thanh Hai - Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Hue City - said that more than 500 young people from three regions of the country have paid their own fees to go to Hue to participate in the event. The group recreated the image of the queen from the North, who had rented outfits and a porters.

"We have reminded before, but because young people do not fully understand the characteristics of local culture, we have led to the incident. However, your enthusiasm and love for traditional costumes are very appreciated, said Mr. Hai.
