According to Box office Vietnam on the afternoon of September 20, the horror film Cam officially premiered and brought in good revenue.
Accordingly, the film earned more than 13 billion VND (including early ticket sales). And just counting on September 20, the film earned nearly 10 billion VND, far surpassing the film "Getting Rich with Ghosts" starring Hoai Linh.
Hoai Linh's project brought in over 216 million VND on September 20 and is currently holding the top 2 spot at the box office. Before that, "Getting Rich with Ghosts" continuously occupied the top 1 spot at the box office, the film is also a rare theatrical project on September 2 that surpassed a hundred billion.
Right from the introduction, the movie Cam aroused curiosity when it was introduced as a horror version of the fairy tale Tam Cam. Combined with the success of two previous works by director Tran Huu Tan, the mini-series "Tet in Hell Village" and the movie "The Soul Eater", many audiences expected something new from Cam.
Compared to the fairy tale, the movie Cam offers a new premise with the “What if” motif that appears in Hollywood movies. What if Cam was not actually the favorite child in the family? What if Tam and Cam's father was still alive?...
In the fairy tale, Cam is a petty person who always bullies the gentle Tam with her stepmother, but Tran Huu Tan's movie is the opposite. Cam (played by Lam Thanh My) was born ugly and was always mistreated by her father Hai Hoang (played by Quoc Cuong) and her biological mother (played by Thuy Diem). On the contrary, Tam (played by Rima Thanh Vy) is the only one in the family who truly loves her half-sister.
From then on, the plot begins to follow the familiar "dark" direction in movies in recent years. The village where Cam's father is the village chief seems peaceful on the outside, but in fact hides a terrible secret.
That peace came from a deal made many years ago in Hai Hoang's family with a demon in the forest named Bach Lao. Every 10 years, Hai Hoang's family had to sacrifice a virgin daughter in the family to the demon. Tragedy happened continuously in Tam Cam's family and the village.
The story of Cam creates a feeling of “familiarity yet strangeness” for the audience. The film version still retains classic details such as calling goby fish to eat, looking for shrimp, testing comedy, and cutting areca trees, but they all have different perspectives.
The special makeup is the strong point of the film, with elaborate designs such as Cam's face, the strange body of the demon named Bach Lao, as well as scenes of villagers being murdered. The climax of the film also left a strong impression with the intense action and charisma of the actors.
The movie has many plus points but still has many logical errors, the plot changes abruptly, the problem solving is somewhat superficial and has many flaws.
