On January 25, information from the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Nghe An province said that Chau Tien Company Limited (located in Nam Cam Industrial Park, Nghi Long Commune, Nghi Loc District) has paid compensation to 21 workers suffering from occupational diseases with a total amount of nearly 1.4 billion VND. According to this agency, the above payment is calculated based on the regulations of the competent authorities.
These 21 people are on the list of 22 cases of pneumoconiosis discovered while still working at the company. One case did not go for an occupational disease medical examination so was not compensated.
The payment of this amount was completed on the afternoon of January 25, 2025.
In addition to the above amount of 1.4 billion VND, Chau Tien Company Limited also supported and paid other medical expenses and occupational disease treatment for 28 other workers with a total amount of 365 million VND.
Previously, in March 2024, 5 workers died of silicosis while working at Chau Tien Company Limited.
Relatives of these 5 people have received compensation from the company for pneumoconiosis with a total amount of more than 561 million VND.
In April 2024, the authorities assessed 66 workers who had worked at Chau Tien Company Limited. The results showed that 66 people (100%) had pneumoconiosis at different levels, the person with the lowest body injury rate was 11%, the person with the highest body injury rate was over 80%.
Nghe An provincial authorities have inspected and concluded that Chau Tien Company Limited has committed many violations. In September 2023, Nghe An Provincial People's Committee issued a decision to fine this company VND 116 million.
Accordingly, the company was fined VND60 million for failing to conduct work environment monitoring to control harmful effects on workers' health as required by law. There are aggravating circumstances for repeated violations. From 2017-2022, the company failed to conduct work environment monitoring as required by law.
The People's Committee of Nghe An province also fined the company VND56 million for failing to conduct occupational disease examinations and detection for 14 workers doing heavy, toxic, dangerous, and especially heavy, toxic, and dangerous work from 2017 to 2022. The aggravating factor of this act is repeated violations.
