Due to heavy rain caused by storm No. 3, on the afternoon of September 8, in Hoa Su Pan 1 village, Muong Hoa commune, a serious landslide occurred, hitting 4 households with 26 people at the foot of the hill.
Immediately after the landslide, the rescue force of Sa Pa town arrived at the scene with local people to search and rescue the buried victims.
Currently, the authorities have discovered and found the bodies of 6 people, and rescued 9 injured people who were taken to the town's General Hospital for emergency treatment.
After being treated, the victims were conscious and in stable health.
The deceased include: Vang Thi M (born in 1956), Giang Thi C (born in 1999), Chau Gia H (born in 2023), Vang Van V (born in 2024), all of H'Mong ethnicity; the identities of the remaining two have not been determined.
Previously, to ensure the safety of tourists, the Department of Culture and Information of Sa Pa town issued a notice requesting the temporary suspension of receiving tourists at tourist areas and spots to ensure storm and flood prevention in the area. The time starts from September 8 until further notice.
According to reports, National Highway 4D leading from Lao Cai city to Sa Pa town was deeply flooded, causing traffic jams. The flooded road lasted for a long time, the strong water flow made it impossible for vehicles going to Sa Pa to move, and traffic was cut off.
In addition, in Sa Pa town, localized flooding also occurred on many inner-city roads.
In light of the above situation, Lao Cai provincial authorities have asked people to limit unnecessary traffic. People should absolutely not travel to flooded areas, collect firewood, fish, or stay away from rivers and streams.
Estimated damage caused by floods is about 2.8 billion VND.
Speaking with Lao Dong, Chairman of Sa Pa Town People's Committee To Ngoc Lien said: "By 4:00 p.m. on September 8, Sa Pa Town had mobilized over 140 people to search for missing people, support people in moving their belongings, and overcome the consequences in the landslide area, of which over 100 people were from the military police and militia to support rescue efforts.
At the same time, establish a Town Command Center at the Town People's Committee Headquarters and an on-site Search and Rescue Command Center in Muong Hoa commune near the landslide area; a medical support working group with ambulances, medicine and doctors.
