On September 18, Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee Tran Minh Khoa said that the locality has sent forces and officials to areas partially flooded by heavy rain to help people transport their belongings and people to safety.
The Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee and leaders of several departments went down to directly inspect the flooded area, requesting armed forces units to support people, ensuring that no human casualties occurred and that property damage was kept to a minimum.
“The city has also directed relevant departments to coordinate with wards and communes to clear blocked waterways. Find long-term solutions to prevent flooding. Direct departments to survey sewers, canals, ditches, and drainage streams to have a repair and upgrade plan to prevent flooding due to heavy rains, affecting people's lives,” said Mr. Khoa.
Many people in Phu Quoc City said that the heavy rain that has lasted for the past few days, and continues to rain today, has caused flooding in some areas. People have moved and placed their belongings high up to avoid damage from the water. The water rose quickly and strongly, in some places the water was nearly a meter high, making it difficult to travel, many households have not had time to evacuate, affecting their lives.
According to the Hydrometeorological Station of Kien Giang province, Phu Quoc city continues to have moderate to heavy rain, some places have very heavy rain with common rainfall from 30-50mm, some places over 60mm. The flooded areas are the inner-city roads of Duong Dong ward; the areas of Cay Thong Trong, Cay Thong Ngoai, Ben Tram, Suoi Cat hamlets (Cua Duong commune) and some places in Cua Can commune...
The inner-city roads of Duong Dong ward are flooded during heavy rain and drained after the rain ends about 3-4 hours. The areas of Cay Thong Trong, Cay Thong Ngoai, Ben Tram, and Suoi Cat hamlets are likely to be flooded for 1 to 2 days. The common depth of flooding on the roads is about 30-50cm, in some places over 70cm (the areas of Cay Thong Trong, Cay Thong Ngoai, Ben Tram, and Suoi Cat hamlets).
