On September 15, about 1,000 banh tet mat cat (a special type of cake of Phu Quoc people) were transported by plane to support the people in the North affected by storm No. 3.
To wrap these 1,000 banh tet loaves, Ms. Ho Thi My Thanh (35 years old, living in Duong Dong ward, Phu Quoc city) - owner of Tu Nghi traditional banh tet shop said, she mobilized all resources from her family and received support from benefactors, and the help of dozens of people.
Ms. Thanh said that to wrap 1,000 banh tet, she used 400kg of sticky rice, 200kg of green beans, 110kg of pork fat and dozens of kg of leaves. Mat cat leaves are a typical type of leaf found in the forests of Phu Quoc. Other ingredients are easy to buy, but the leaves themselves are quite difficult to find. Because the Mat cat tree has many thorns, it must be cut very carefully. Not only the leaves are cut, but the thorny branches are also cleaned to make strings to tie the cakes.
"The family mobilized all members to go into the forest to collect honeysuckle leaves for 2 days, and other raw materials were donated by many benefactors in the city for 1 day," said Ms. Thanh.
When Thanh's family learned that they wanted to wrap 1,000 banh tet to support the people in the North affected by storm No. 3, nearly 60 people in the city volunteered to help complete the cakes in 1 day. Because there were so many cakes, everyone stayed up all night to take turns watching the fire.
Ms. Ho Thanh Huong, the second generation of the shop's traditional rice cake wrapper, confided: "The people of Phu Quoc sympathize with the damage and loss of our compatriots in the North. We want to contribute a little effort as well as the hearts of the islanders to our compatriots, the spirit of the rich helping the poor."
"Seeing the images of damage in newspapers, on TV and social networks, we could not hold back our tears. That urged us to join hands to wrap banh tet to support our compatriots in the North," Ms. Huong said emotionally.
Ms. Thanh also informed that 1,000 banh tet loaves were supported by Phu Quoc International Airport to be transported free of charge to Hanoi, and when they arrived at Noi Bai Airport, someone would receive them and then deliver them to the people affected by storm No. 3. "Phu Quoc International Airport has prioritized sending the cakes as soon as possible, so right after boiling, we quickly packed and vacuum-sealed the cakes, so we had to make the most of the time," Ms. Thanh added.
Ms. Bien My Linh - President of Phu Quoc City Women's Union - said that many women in the area joined hands to make banh tet to support the people in the North affected by storm No. 3. This is a sentiment and noble gesture of women and people of the pearl island to the people in the North. Through this, they want to contribute a little effort to help people overcome difficulties.
Phu Quoc, like many localities across the country, has also called for support for people affected by storm No. 3. Many people have donated money and materials through the gathering point of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Phu Quoc City.
Previously, on September 12, the City Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Phu Quoc City organized a launching ceremony calling on all people to participate in contributing to support people in provinces and cities affected by storm No. 3.
