Mekong Delta faces peak salinity intrusion

PHƯƠNG ANH |

Mekong Delta - salinity intrusion is forecast to reach its largest peak from the beginning of the dry season from February 28 to March 4, 2025.

The Southern Institute of Water Resources Research forecasts as above. Accordingly, the depth of the salinity level is 4‰ when the highest is 40 - 45 km from the sea on the Tien River branches; 52 - 56 km on the Ham Luong River branch, 50 - 60 km on the Co Chien River branch and 50 - 55 km on the Hau River branch.

The forecast of salinity intrusion in the 2024 - 2025 dry season is higher than the average of many years. February to April is the season of high salinity, so coastal localities need to proactively take measures to prevent drought and salinity in accordance with local conditions.

In the upper Mekong Delta, there are sufficient water resources and difficulties, mainly in the mountainous areas of Tinh Bien and Tri Ton, and water storage and irrigation measures need to be implemented to save water.

The central Mekong Delta region has basic water resources to ensure and properly operate salinity control and water storage works. When collecting sweetness or watering crops, it is necessary to strictly check the salinity, especially for fruit trees.

Unusual salinity intrusion in the coastal areas of the Mekong Delta can affect water resources and production in coastal irrigation systems such as Go Cong, Bac Ben Tre, Tra Vinh coastal areas and the Long Phu - Tiep Nhat system. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare response plans and store and use water appropriately, especially water to ensure fruit-growing areas in Chau Thanh, Cho Lach, and Mo Cay Bac - Nam districts of Ben Tre province; Ke Sach district - Soc Trang province.
