After many months of collecting opinions, the Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City has just submitted a document to the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City regarding the issuance of ticket prices for Metro Line 1.
For one-way tickets, passengers using cash will pay from 7,000 VND to 20,000 VND per trip, depending on the distance traveled. If choosing to pay cashless, the one-way ticket price will be slightly reduced, ranging from 6,000 VND to 19,000 VND.
In addition, the HCMC Department of Transportation also proposed flexible ticket packages, including a day ticket priced at VND40,000, with no limit on the number of trips per day, and a three-day ticket priced at VND90,000, allowing unlimited travel for three consecutive days. These ticket packages are intended to facilitate frequent passengers using Metro Line 1 or tourists who need to travel a lot in a short period of time.
For monthly tickets, people can choose a ticket package with a fee of 300,000 VND/month. Students will receive a 50% discount, only 150,000 VND/month, to encourage young people to use public transport.
The above Metro Line 1 ticket was introduced after the HCMC budget had subsidized it, to suit the payment needs of the people.
Ho Chi Minh City plans to issue about 2.1 million prepaid cards for Metro Line 1.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee will also submit to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council a separate resolution on cases of ticket price exemption and reduction.
Policy beneficiaries such as people with revolutionary contributions, people with disabilities, the elderly (over 60 years old) and children under 6 years old accompanied by adults will be completely free when traveling on Metro Line 1. According to calculations, the total cost of support for these policy beneficiaries is expected to be about 10.7 billion VND per year.
During the first 30 days of commercial operation, Ho Chi Minh City will support all ticket prices for passengers to encourage people to experience Metro Line 1.
To implement this, the city budget will spend about 15.7 billion VND for free operation and an additional 17.3 billion VND for 17 bus routes connecting Metro Line 1 during the same period.
This policy, if approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council at the December 2024 session, will take effect from January 1, 2025.
Metro Line 1 project started in 2012, with a total investment of over VND43,700 billion. This is the first metro line in Ho Chi Minh City, nearly 20 km long, connecting the city center to the eastern gateway.
The line includes 11 elevated stations and 3 underground stations, expected to serve about 39,000 passengers per day in the 2025 - 2027 period.
After 12 years of construction and many extensions, Metro Line 1 is currently 98.81% complete and is expected to begin commercial operation from December 22, 2024.
