After nearly a week of locust suddenly appearing with high density and causing widespread damage in Nong Truong Viet Trung town (Bo Trach district), the agricultural sector of Quang Binh province has begun to inspect and guide the initial treatment plan to help people minimize damage.
On June 7, the Department of Agriculture and Environment (DONRE) of Quang Binh province said that it had just coordinated with the Center for Crop Production and Plant Protection of Zone IV to conduct a survey of the scene in Quyet Thang residential group - where the crab herd was recorded attacking more than 7 hectares of the stream to collect bamboo shoots from people.
The trees were eaten with thick leaves, the young bamboo shoots were broken, and many of the bushes showed signs of drying out. The total area of the affected stream is estimated at 20 hectares.
According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bo Trach district and information from the people, this is the first time in this area that a locust has appeared to damage the stream with such a serious level.
This insect rarely appears in the plains, so it is unlikely to intervene, causing both economic and spiritual damage. In that situation, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has directed specialized forces to coordinate with local authorities to propagate and guide people on initial preventive measures.
In the current period, the main measure is manual handling: using rackets to catch locust, feeding poultry, collecting soaking in soil to make organic fertilizer or destroy.
In addition, you can use a plastic bag trap combined with lights or prey at night to attract the locust to fly in, then close the bag mouth.
In high density cases, people are advised to use pesticides containing active ingredients such as Imidacloprid, Emamectin Bezoate + Lufenuron or Nereistoxin for spraying according to safety instructions.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Dinh Hiep said that the locust usually hatches eggs around September-November every year, and the eggs will "winter" in the soil until March-May next year. Therefore, the period from November to February is an important period to proactively prevent deductions from the roots.
People can dig up the soil in places where egg lumps are suspected, encouraging the poultry to eat locust eggs. In areas along streams and streams - where the locust often lays eggs - it is necessary to proactively break the holes, collect, destroy or release chickens and ducks to eat.
From March to April, it is necessary to monitor the appearance of young locust early so that the racket can catch or spray medicine in time. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development also requested the People's Committee of Bo Trach district to continue to count the damage, update the situation to have a plan to support production, and coordinate with specialized sectors to strengthen monitoring of pests on the stream, avoiding spreading and breaking out into a major epidemic.
Local people want more detailed training on how to recognize, treat ovaries and use safe medicine, especially in the context of complicated weather changes, many types of pests and diseases tend to increase abnormally.
As reported by Lao Dong Newspaper, in the past week, the herd of locust has continuously appeared, flying densely and destroying the mangrove plant - the type of tree that is attached to the livelihoods of many households. With the characteristics of rapid regeneration and year-round bamboo shoots, the mangrove plant when eaten with leaf stems will lose its growth ability, leading to a decline in productivity in many subsequent crops.
