Construction began in late 2022, with National Highway 50 being expanded to nearly 7km in length, from the intersection with Nguyen Van Linh Street to the border of Long An Province. The project includes more than 4km of new routes parallel to the current national highway and more than 2km of expanding the existing road from 7m to 34m, with 6 lanes.
According to the HCM City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board (investor), the construction of the new 4.2km parallel route has reached about 72% progress. However, the existing National Highway 50 expansion packages have only reached 16%.
The National Highway 50 expansion project has affected 594 households and organizations, with a total compensation cost of about 1,280 billion VND, separately implemented by Binh Chanh district many years ago. Up to now, the project still has about 20 areas that have not been cleared.
The first section of the route adjacent to Nguyen Van Linh Street still has a house that has not been demolished. The existing Gia Hoa Residential Area section still has 3 houses that Gia Hoa Enterprise has not yet completed compensation for. The Phong Phu 4 Residential Area section still has 8 houses adjacent to Trinh Quang Nghi Street blocking the route managed by Khang Phuc Enterprise that have not yet completed compensation.
In addition, technical infrastructure such as power stations, well stations and works related to water supply pipelines are also hindering construction progress.
For the existing National Highway 50 expansion section, there are still 19 households that have not completed demolition, including 7 households related to the project of the road to Da Phuoc cemetery and the road to the landfill.
The compensation and site clearance problems in residential areas such as Gia Hoa and Phong Phu 4 have been reported and proposed by the People's Committee of Binh Chanh district to relevant departments and branches to find solutions.
The Transport Department aims to complete the parallel road and Ba Lon Bridge by the end of this year. The existing Highway 50 extension, Ong Thin Bridge and ancillary items such as lighting and tree systems are expected to be completed in 2025.
To achieve these milestones, the Traffic Committee recommends that the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee direct relevant departments and branches to promptly resolve compensation policies to encourage businesses and organizations to hand over land.
In addition, the People's Committee of Binh Chanh District was asked to speed up the site clearance process and coordinate with technical infrastructure units to relocate structures such as electric poles, well stations, and water pipes. The Traffic Department also recommended that electricity and water supply units complete the relocation before September 30 to ensure that the construction progress is not affected.
The National Highway 50 expansion project, once completed, will increase traffic and economic connectivity between Ho Chi Minh City, Long An and the Western provinces. The project also links other key routes such as Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway, Ring Road 3 (under construction); Nguyen Van Linh Avenue... helping to complete the southern traffic network of the city.
