More good news for the durian industry
Durian of Krong Nang district has just been granted a Certificate of collective trademark protection "Krong Nang Durian" by the Ministry of Science and Technology with a validity period of 10 years.
According to the statistics of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Krong Nang district, the whole district has nearly 9,000 hectares of durian, including nearly 10 growing area codes. The district's authorities have been encouraging people to develop durian according to the chain, cooperatives and cooperatives. The People's Committees of communes and towns have also strengthened the management of plant varieties, pesticides and provided guidance on the process of planting and caring for durian trees for people.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hong (Krong Nang district) shared: "The fact that durian of the district is granted collective trademark protection certificate will greatly help farmers and businesses in the area. This is considered an important passport for durian products of Dak Lak province in particular and the whole country in general to reach markets in countries around the world."
According to Mr. Hong, in the face of the district's continuously increasing durian growing area over the past 3 years, farmers are also very alert, not rushing to continue increasing output but only trying to improve quality.
The higher quality the durian tree produces, the better the price. Sometimes quantity does not equal quality. With the 2 hectares of durian trees, Mr. Hong's family needs to try to apply techniques, fertilize, and take care of them properly. If the weather is favorable and prices do not fluctuate much, next year's crop will be very likely to be bumper.
Up to now, Krong Nang district is the third locality in Dak Lak province to be granted a collective protection certificate for durian. Previously, in 2022, Krong Pac district was granted a collective trademark registration certificate for “Krong Pac durian” by the Intellectual Property Office. After that, Cu M'gar district was granted a collective trademark registration certificate for “Cu M'gar durian”.
Need to expand durian export market soon
According to statistics from the Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee, in the 2024 crop season, the locality has risen to the top of the country in terms of durian acreage with more than 32,700 hectares. The total area for harvesting products is 15,852 hectares (accounting for 48.35%). Durian output in 2024 is estimated to reach over 300,000 tons.
Local authorities are focusing on developing a project to develop the durian industry. The goal is that by 2030, the durian growing area in the province will develop stably to about 40,000 hectares, with an output of about 790,000 tons/year. Of which, the area certified and assigned a growing area code is about 26,000 hectares.
From the perspective of a person who used to work in management and has experience in growing durian, Mr. Vu Duc Con - Chairman of the Dak Lak Durian Association (former Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) - commented: "The fact that some localities in the province have been granted certificates of protection for collective durian trademarks is a good sign. This is the initial condition to confirm the growing area code, meeting the criteria for export".
According to Mr. Con, that should not be used as a measure of success. Because, to have sustainable success with durian trees, many factors are needed from quality, market trends, price fluctuations. In which, the most decisive factor is that farmers must focus on applying science and technology, cultivation skills to produce quality products for export.
"In fact, it is easy to let foreign partners know about you. But to have long-term business partners with local farmers and businesses is not a simple matter. This is a different category, requiring prestige, good product quality, ensuring food hygiene and safety... In the future, in addition to the Chinese market, farmers and businesses need to set a goal of exporting durian in Dak Lak to many other countries in the world," Mr. Con added.
