Ho Chi Minh City is facing a paradox, more and more cars but fewer and fewer parking spaces.
Millions of vehicles circulate every day, but the centralized parking system almost cannot keep up.
Therefore, the policy of prioritizing the development of multi-story assembly parking lots in the central area is a noteworthy direction.
Technically, this is a model using a steel frame system and pre-assembled parking modules. Cars are raised to the floors by lifting ladders or semi-automatic systems.
Thanks to taking advantage of height and small ground area, the capacity has increased many times. Just a few hundred square meters of land can create hundreds of parking spaces.
The biggest advantage of this model is that the cost is significantly lower than underground parking lots. No need to dig deep underground, no need to handle complex structures or waterproof like underground works.
Construction time is also much faster. An assembled parking lot can be completed in a few months instead of many years.
Flexibility is also a strength, demand is increasing, and modules can be installed to increase parking space. If there are changes in planning, the system can be dismantled and moved to another location.
This is a solution to effectively utilize height space, urban resources that are often neglected.
Many major cities around the world have widely applied automatic or semi-automatic high-rise parking models to solve the shortage of parking spaces in the city center.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport previously (now the Department of Construction) proposed locations such as Le Lai street, Le Van Tam Park area, Cho Lon Bus Station, Hai Thuong Lan Ong to build high-rise parking lots, which is very suitable.
With just over 1,500 m2 of land, parking spaces can be arranged for 350 cars under 9 seats and 200 motorbikes.
More importantly, the ability to attract investment.
With low costs and short capital recovery times, businesses will be more bold in participating than underground projects with huge investment capital.
While underground parking lot projects are still struggling with procedures, high-rise parking lots can be built quickly to solve urgent needs in the short term.
Cities not only develop horizontally, underground space, but also must effectively exploit height space.
If Ho Chi Minh City is determined to implement high-rise parking lot projects, it will quickly solve the parking problem.
And, indirectly solve the traffic jam problem.
