A series of power source projects are being massively implemented
Statistics from the Gia Lai Provincial Department of Industry and Trade, implementing the Adjustment of Power Plan VIII for the period 2026 - 2030, Gia Lai is allocated to develop 110 power source projects with a total capacity of 5,501MW. Currently, the province has been and is implementing 91 projects with a total capacity of about 4,924MW, reaching nearly 90% of the total capacity allocated according to the plan.
It is expected that in the period 2026 - 2030, there will be 53 power source projects connected to the 220kV or more grid with a total capacity of 4,334MW and 68 projects connected to the 110kV grid with a total capacity of 1,185MW in the province.
In Quang Ngai, after the merger of the province, the locality has great hydropower potential, especially with the western terrain having many hills and dense rivers. The Quang Ngai Department of Industry and Trade statistics show that the whole province currently has 17 hydropower projects under construction, with a total capacity of 336.9MW and 13 hydropower projects in the preparation for investment and construction phase, with a total capacity of 132.2MW.
In addition, Quang Ngai province is calling for and promoting investment in many other energy projects, including 25 hydropower projects with a total capacity of 266.2MW; 11 solar power projects with a total capacity of 600MW; 6 wind power projects with a total capacity of 522.55MW; 2 biomass power projects with a total capacity of 38MW and 1 Quang Ngai Waste-to-Energy Plant project with a capacity of 15MW.
Investing in power grids to avoid the risk of wasting social resources
The entire power grid system is managed, invested and built by Vietnam Electricity Group. According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Que - Vice Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee, if power sources go into operation while the transmission grid does not meet the needs, it will lead to the risk of local overload, limiting the ability to unload capacity, causing waste of social investment resources and affecting power supply security.
Therefore, Gia Lai province proposed that Vietnam Electricity Group prioritize resources to invest in 500kV, 220kV and 110kV power grid projects according to the Adjustment of Power Plan VIII, accelerate the progress of increasing the capacity of transformer stations, and renovate overloaded power lines, especially in the Krong Pa area and areas with many renewable energy projects.
Gia Lai is striving to achieve the double-digit economic growth target as directed by the Government, aiming to become a processing industry, logistics and energy center of the region. Therefore, the provincial government identifies electricity sources for production and business as essential technical infrastructure, playing a decisive role in the local competitiveness, investment attraction and sustainable development.
In the period 2025 - 2026, Central Power Corporation (EVNCPC) invested in 10 110kV power grid projects in Quang Ngai province with a total investment of more than 917 billion VND. To date, 3 projects have been completed and energized; the remaining projects are expected to be completed and put into operation in the period 2027 - 2030. According to the electricity industry, some other power grid projects are facing obstacles in determining the origin, type of land, completing cadastral records; inventory, compensation, support and site clearance.
In early August 2026, Vice Chairman of Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee Tran Phuoc Hien directed functional sectors and localities to urgently inventory land, definitively resolve problems with compensation and site clearance for power grid projects in 2026. At the same time, he proposed that the electricity sector soon complete legal procedures and allocate resources to accelerate investment in transformer stations and power transmission lines in the area, so that Quang Ngai can contribute electricity output, ensure production, business and national energy security.
