Electricity leak
One typical case is the family of Mr. Duong Van Tam (Lien Vinh residential group, Hai Binh ward, Thanh Hoa). The family's July electricity bill suddenly increased to nearly 9.8 million VND, more than 8 times higher than the average of previous months, even though living conditions have not changed and only use equipment such as lighting, fans, refrigerators, rice cookers, do not use air conditioners or machines that consume a lot of electricity.
Suspecting an error when typing the meter number, Mr. Tam asked the electricity industry to check. The results showed that the meter was operating normally. However, when checking more carefully, Nghi Son Power Branch discovered that the power line behind his actor was leaking electricity due to the common telecommunication line damaging the insulation layer. Initially, the electricity industry asked Mr. Tam to pay the full amount and instructed the complaint to the network operators. After working, a network operator admitted the mistake and pledged to pay the entire amount of electricity generated in July.
Another case is the family of Mr. Le Xuan Hung (Quang Trung Street 1, Ngoc Lac Commune, Thanh Hoa) receiving the electricity bill for June 2025 (from May 20 to June 20) for the amount of VND 5,839,000, while in previous months the family only used it for 250,000 - 300,000 VND/month.
Due to the unusually large and high amount of money, Mr. Hung has not immediately paid to find out the cause. In mid-July 2025, Quang Trung 1 Electricity Service Cooperative (power supplier) announced that it would stop supplying electricity due to late payment, forcing him to pay with a plan, paying 1 million VND per month until more than 5.8 million VND was spent.
According to the representative of the leader of Quang Trung 1 Quang Town Electricity Service Cooperative, Ngoc Lac Commune, in fact, the total electricity bill according to Mr. Hung's family's meter meter index is not more than VND 5,839,000 but VND 9,839,000, equivalent to the electricity output used at 2,680 kWh. Seeing the unusually high amount of money, the Board of Directors of the cooperative met and decided to only calculate the electricity price at one level, at 100 kWh, down the scale by about 4 million VND.
"When we closed the meter for Mr. Hung's family, seeing the electricity number was unusually high, we reported it to the family and conducted an inspection to determine the cause of the electricity short circuit in the power line system. In the area where we manage and supply electricity, there are also about 6-7 cases similar to Mr. Hung's house" - said a representative of Quang Trung 1 Quang Town Power Service Cooperative.
The electricity industry recommends that people
After receiving feedback from people about the unusually high electricity bill, Mr. Hoang Hai - Director of Thanh Hoa Power Company directed the Electricity Management Teams to go directly to the scene to conduct an inspection and clarify the incidents reported by the people. Through inspection, it was determined that some of the reasons for the increase in household electricity bills were due to electric leakage, power outages...
According to Thanh Hoa Electricity, electrical leakage is not uncommon, especially when the weather is hot, stormy combined with old, peeling equipment without regular inspection. Third-party equipment (such as telecommunications network operators, billboards, etc.) installed incorrectly, shared resources or indirectly affected the civil power system can also cause power outages.
Thanh Hoa Electricity Industry also recommends that people should pay attention to signs such as: unusually increased electricity bills compared to consumption levels; electrical equipment with a mild burning smell, unusually heat radiation; low-load heat-grid transmission lines; aptomat/kscreens that suddenly stop without a clear cause. When detecting it, it is necessary to immediately contact the power management unit for timely inspection and handling to avoid major damage.
