Hanoi elderly people have more space for health care and daytime socializing

Hanoi - The daytime elderly care model in Dong Da ward is opening up another space for the elderly to practice health and socialize with the community.

From July 2026, Dong Da ward (Hanoi) piloted a day-time elderly care model, creating more space for the elderly to monitor their health, exercise, rest and socialize. Not staying overnight, the elderly come to the facility during the day and then return home. Officially welcoming semi-boarding elderly people from August 1st, the model received the attention of many elderly people in Dong Da ward.

In the morning, after being checked for health indicators, they participate in appropriate exercises, then rest or choose activities such as chess, soaking feet, massage, karaoke, cultural exchange.

For Ms. Vuong Thi Ngoc (Dong Da ward), the thing that makes her happiest is having another place to meet, mobilize and live with her peers, improving her spiritual life.

We are very happy and proud that the country is increasingly developing, and the lives of the elderly are also increasingly being cared for. The staff in charge here are very enthusiastic in supporting, asking questions, and being polite. A young generation like that makes us very reassured," Ms. Ngoc said.

At the age of 75, Ms. Duong Thi Mai (Dong Da ward) also found joy in activities at the facility. She said that every day she comes here, her blood pressure is measured, her health is monitored, and she exercises at home and outdoors.

At home, there is often no one to talk to, coming here with friends of the same age, the spirit is also more comfortable. We practice, then interact, sing karaoke together, when we are in pain, there is always staff support," Ms. Mai shared.

According to Dr. Le Thi Phuong, in charge of professional matters at the daytime elderly care facility in Dong Da ward, the model is meaningful in the context that many families have elderly people but their children and grandchildren have to work all day and cannot stay at home to take care of them regularly.

This model helps families reduce the pressure of care when their children have to go to work, and at the same time creates conditions for the elderly to be cared for right in the community. The elderly have a place to live, exercise and are regularly monitored for their health," said Dr. Phuong.

According to Dr. Phuong, activities at the facility also aim to monitor chronic diseases commonly encountered in the elderly, and at the same time prevent and intervene early for problems related to high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Through regular monitoring, we can also recognize abnormal issues early to have appropriate handling directions," the doctor emphasized.

In Dong Da ward, the elderly account for about 22% of the population, equivalent to more than 18,000 people. As children and grandchildren are increasingly busy with work, a space for care, exercise and socializing for the elderly during the day becomes a practical need.
